General HVAC Questions
6 Questions
What areas do you serve for heating and air conditioning services?
We serve Huntsville, Madison, Harvest, Meridianville, Toney, Decatur, and surrounding North Alabama communities throughout the Tennessee Valley region. If you’re not sure whether we cover your area, give us a call, we’ll let you know right away.
How can I lower my energy bills with my HVAC system?
A few practical strategies will significantly lower your monthly bills: schedule professional maintenance twice a year, install a programmable or smart thermostat, improve your home’s insulation and seal air leaks, and consider upgrading to a high-efficiency system if yours is older than 10–12 years.
What thermostat settings are most energy-efficient for Huntsville's climate?
Set your thermostat to 78°F in summer and 68°F in winter for the best balance of comfort and efficiency. Programmable or smart thermostats adjust these temperatures automatically based on your schedule, helping you save even more.
What are the benefits of upgrading to a high-efficiency HVAC system?
You’ll get lower energy bills, better indoor air quality, more consistent comfort across rooms, fewer repairs, and a reduced environmental impact. Newer systems also include advanced features like variable-speed technology and smart home integration.
What's the difference between a heat pump and a traditional HVAC system?
A traditional HVAC system uses a separate furnace and AC unit. A heat pump transfers heat using electricity to handle both heating and cooling in a single system. Heat pumps are especially well-suited to Alabama’s mild winters and can save you money year-round.
How does a programmable thermostat improve HVAC efficiency?
Programmable thermostats automatically adjust heating and cooling when you’re asleep or away, so the system isn’t running full-blast when no one needs it. Pair that with regular maintenance and you’ll see meaningful savings on your monthly bill.
Maintenance & Repairs
9 Questions
How do I know if my HVAC system needs repair or full replacement?
Watch for these warning signs: rising energy bills, unusual noises (banging, rattling, squealing), uneven room temperatures, and frequent breakdowns, especially if your system is over 10 years old. Our technicians will give you an honest recommendation either way.
What are the signs my HVAC system is running inefficiently?
Common signs include rising energy bills, inconsistent room temperatures, frequent on/off cycling, weak airflow, and excessive dust buildup. Routine maintenance prevents most of these problems before they impact your comfort.
What are the most common HVAC problems homeowners face?
The most frequent issues are refrigerant leaks, clogged filters, thermostat malfunctions, and dirty coils. Each one can usually be caught early, and prevented through routine seasonal maintenance.
Why is my heating system making strange noises?
Banging, rattling, or squealing sounds usually point to loose components, a failing blower motor, or restricted airflow. We recommend a professional inspection right away, small noises often signal problems that get more expensive the longer they’re ignored.
How do I prevent my AC from freezing up in summer?
Keep your air filters clean, ensure proper airflow around the outdoor unit, and schedule regular maintenance. If your system does freeze up, turn it off immediately to prevent compressor damage and call us for service.
How do I know if my ductwork needs repair or replacement?
Look out for uneven heating or cooling, excess dust around the home, rattling or whistling sounds from the vents, and unexplained jumps in your energy bill. Any of these can point to leaky or damaged ducts that need professional attention.
How often should I service my HVAC system and change filters?
Schedule professional maintenance every six months, once for heating, once for cooling and replace your air filters monthly. This is the single best thing you can do to extend the life of your system and keep energy bills low.
Why does my AUX heat turn on when it's extremely cold?
This is normal operation. When outdoor temperatures drop too low for your heat pump to work efficiently on its own, the auxiliary (or “AUX”) heat kicks in to provide supplemental warmth. It’s a sign your system is doing exactly what it’s designed to do.
What does your diagnostic charge cover?
Our diagnostic fee covers travel and a thorough system assessment. It does not include the cost of repairs or leak detection. We always provide upfront pricing before any work begins, so you’ll know exactly what to expect.
Installation & Replacement
6 Questions
What size HVAC system does my Huntsville home need?
The right size depends on your square footage, insulation level, window count, and the local climate. Our technicians perform a detailed load calculation (Manual J) to recommend the system that’s truly the right fit, never oversized or undersized.
What type of HVAC system works best in Alabama's climate?
Heat pumps are an excellent fit for Alabama. They handle both heating and cooling efficiently and tend to cost less to run than traditional split systems in our climate. We’ll walk you through your options and recommend what fits your home and budget best.
Should I repair or replace my HVAC if it's over 10 years old?
A good rule of thumb: if the repair cost is more than 50% of a new system’s price, replacement is usually the better long-term value. Newer high-efficiency systems also save you money every month on energy bills.
What factors should I consider when choosing a new HVAC system?
Focus on energy efficiency ratings (SEER for cooling, HSPF for heating), the size and layout of your home, the condition of your existing ductwork, and your overall budget. Our team will help you weigh each factor and pick the right system for your situation.
How long does a new HVAC installation take?
Most residential installations take 1 to 2 days, depending on system type and the complexity of the job. We’ll give you a clear timeline before we start so you know exactly what to expect.
Will I need ductwork modifications when replacing my system?
Modifications may be needed if you have airflow issues, uneven temperatures between rooms, or visible duct damage. We’ll inspect your existing ductwork during our consultation and let you know if any changes are necessary.
Indoor Air Quality & Efficiency
5 Questions
What's the best way to improve indoor air quality?
The most effective approach combines three things: a quality air purifier, proper humidity control, and regular duct cleaning. Our indoor air quality team can recommend the right combination based on your home and any specific health concerns.
Why is my home still humid even with the AC running?
Your AC may be oversized for your home, or there may be a drainage issue. The most reliable solution for persistent humidity is a whole-home dehumidifier, which works alongside your existing system to keep moisture in check year-round.
Can ceiling fans help my HVAC system?
Yes, ceiling fans help circulate conditioned air more evenly across each room, which reduces strain on your HVAC system and lowers energy costs. Run them counterclockwise in summer and clockwise on low in winter.
Do you offer air purifiers and dehumidifiers?
Yes, we install whole-home air purifiers and dehumidifiers that integrate directly with your HVAC system, treating every room rather than just one. Learn more about our indoor air quality services →
What are the benefits of a whole-home dehumidifier?
A whole-home dehumidifier controls moisture throughout your entire house, which prevents mold growth, reduces allergens, makes the home feel more comfortable at higher thermostat settings, and helps lower cooling costs.
Emergency & Seasonal HVAC Needs
5 Questions
What should I do if my HVAC stops working in extreme weather?
First, check your thermostat settings and your air filter. If neither is the problem, call us right away — we offer 24/7 emergency service with no after-hours surcharges, so you’ll never pay extra to get help when you need it most.
My AC is blowing warm air — what should I do?
Make sure your thermostat is set to “cool” and check that your air filter isn’t clogged. If those check out, you may have a refrigerant leak or compressor issue — both require professional diagnosis. Give us a call and we’ll get a tech out to you fast.
How do I prevent my HVAC from freezing in cold weather?
Schedule regular maintenance, make sure your home is properly insulated, and keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, snow, and debris. A pre-winter tune-up is your best line of defense against unexpected breakdowns.
Why is my heating bill unusually high this winter?
The most common culprits are poor insulation, leaky ductwork, dirty filters, or simply an aging system. A professional assessment will pinpoint exactly where the inefficiency is so you can stop overpaying.
How should I prepare my HVAC for winter?
Schedule heating maintenance before the temperature drops. A pre-season tune-up ensures safe, efficient operation and catches small problems before they become emergency calls in January.

This is not your typical review for Indoor Comfort Systems so read the entire REVIEW!!! First of all, I do not generally publish reviews online; however, Indoor Comfort Systems did such a fantastic job installing a new HVAC system for my SunRoom I just needed to comment on the great Job they did for me. From the salesman Preston McGuire to the Field Supervisor Jeff Johnson and down to the installation team I can not say enough about the professionalism, knowledge and general courtesy exercised to answer my questions and concerns. The level of detail in the workmanship during the installation can only be related to the commitment of Indoor Comfort Systems to provide training in conjunction with hiring quality personnel to perform the work, not only at the management level but also the installation team. This installation was a Retro HVAC installation with the house being built about one year ago. Jeff Johnson and his team specialize in post-new construction HVAC installations. His goal is to make this HVAC system look like it was installed at time of construction. That is just what Mr. Johnson did, this approach does require more detail and knowledge on his part and yes, he does have pride in his work which you never see in todays busy competitive HVAC market. I had a concern about the unit being loud when the unit delivered heat or cooling with the SunRoom being small. Mr. Johnson confirmed to me that the unit would be installed with enough duct work on the inlet and sized correctly so that the HVAC system would be quiet. I would say that it does not take more time to do the job right the first time and that is exactly what Jeff Johnson does. I am so impressed with Mr. Johnson , and no, we are not related, it is his attention to detail on the Job and his ability to convey his work instructions to his hand-picked team. Now about his team they willingly worked for Jeff, and I could tell it was like an apprenticeship in the way he respected each of his young installers. What was impressive was their respect for Mr. Johnson. Even when he was not present during the installation each and every worker was so polite and were taking pride in their work to complete the assigned work from Mr. Johnson. The work was always inspected by Jeff Johnson and if something needed correcting, he explained to his installation team what needed to be corrected with respect. Note: every installer was excellent at what they were doing during the installation and worked very well together. I also have to mention that the installation team were very clean during all phases of the installation to protect and not damage my home or yard. What does all this mean, I cannot say enough about the team at Indoor Comfort Systems if you need an HVAC system installed or if you have unique problem with your HVAC system do not hesitate to call Indoor Comfort Systems. Obviously, their management is dedicated to hiring quality people from supervisors to installers. Please see the attached pictures of my HVAC Retro installation. It is very rarely I am satisfied with every aspect of work being completed at my house, but this is the exception, I am totally happy with my HVAC system installation by Indoor Comfort Systems."
